More on the electrolysis of salt water

It looks like a secondary reaction -- involving the salt and the water -- and possibly a second secondary reaction involving the copper, explains a lot of what we saw in our version of splitting water molecules.

A concise explanation can be found on a discussion board at a British site called The Naked Scientists. Explains everything except the black flakes. Have to keep working on that bit.
